Reflections on Two Years of Med School in Puerto Rico

This interview is the latest in an Accepted blog series featuring  interviews with medical school applicants and students, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at  top medical schools and the med school application process. And now, introducing Jani†¦ Accepted: Wed like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad?   Jani: Hey all! I am Janice, but most people call me Jani, and I am born and raised in Puerto Rico, a small gem in the middle of the Caribbean. I went to our state university, University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Accepted: Where are you in med school? What year?   Jani: I go to school at Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico and I am currently in my second year. Accepted: Why did you choose this program? How was it the best fit for you?   Jani: To be honest it was my only offer but I really liked their program over the other programs on the Island because of their curriculum (which then changed a little) and the fact that most of their students go to great residency programs in the States. Accepted: What experiences have you had that led you to want to pursue a career in medicine?   Jani: I have always had an interest in science and medicine. My mom used to watch a lot of Discovery Health programs and I would be intrigued by what I saw. Furthermore, in 2009 I got the opportunity to go to a Leadership Forum on Medicine and we got to interact with students and residents. We also went to visit medical schools and hospitals, and that is when I knew this is what I was going to pursue. Accepted: Do you have any ideas yet about what youll specialize in? Whats been your favorite rotation so far? Jani: I have not started rotations but I have had the opportunity to shadow and interact with residents of internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology. Also we have had shadowing with primary care physicians. From those experiences I have found a passion for women’s health and maternity medicine. So anyone who asks me, I answer that I want to be an OB/GYN, although I am open to other choices. Accepted: In your blog you talk about how awful the second year of med school is. Why is that?   Jani: Second year is crazy hectic. There is almost double the material from first year and in my school we get a shorter second semester than most schools. In addition to that, our curriculum changed last year and we have tests every Monday (sometimes 2 tests per week) and there is very little time to do anything other than study. Also sometimes you get overwhelmed with all the material and feel like you are not learning as much and you would like or should. Finally, to all of that craziness, add the fact that we need to prep for the first board exam and everything just doubles. So that is why I think second year is horrible – sorry for the mini rant. Accepted: Can you tell us about some of your non-medical interests and hobbies?   Jani: I enjoy baking and going on road trips/trips with my husband and friends. I also love writing and reading but both of those have been on hold since med school started. Part of that is reason for starting this blog, reconnecting with myself and doing things I enjoy. Accepted:   Looking back at the med school admissions process, what would you say was your greatest challenge? How did you overcome it? How would you advise others who may be faced with a similar challenge?   Jani: This one took me a while to think about. My greatest challenge was my MCAT. Being from Puerto Rico, Spanish is our native language and in college 99% of our classes are in Spanish. Our regional scores are lower than those in the mainland and that poses a challenge when applying for medical school. I really wanted to go to school in the mainland but my score proved a challenge. I overcame that with my interviews. Whenever I went to an interview I gave it 100% and I tried to be as genuine as possible. I wanted to make sure my interview showed that I was dedicated and I had the skills needed to make it. So I tried to ace my interviews and show them who I am and what I am capable of. Accepted: Tell us about your blog! Who is your target audience? How have you learned or benefited from the blogging experience? Jani: My blog is my sanctuary, my place to reconnect with myself and write about things I love that I cannot do anywhere else. I have always loved fashion and beauty but because those things are not a priority in my path towards becoming a doctor they got pushed away and replaced by homework and studying. As the years went by something within me was missing and it was precisely that, nourishing my makeup and fashion addiction. I realized I can have both things, my smarts and my looks and I have decided to work for it. It not only makes me happy, it makes me feel confident and good about myself. My target audience is any girl or woman aspiring to be in a professional position (doctor, lawyer, business, etc.) and wants to look and feel like a supermodel. It has not yet been a month of blogging, but I have learned that you can do anything you set your mind to do and most importantly be yourself, be honest. P.S. The American government started to recognize the new immigrants, and the government saw their children as loyal Americans. This has opened a lot of up doors of opportunity for change for American minorities, as American Indians who were exposed for the first time to urban life, African Americans reserved more freedom, women who started to have the ability to work, and Asian Americans who were the most glaring example of the failure to be adequately pluralistic. At the beginning of World War 2, American Indians played a big role during the war. 25,000 of them served in the army â€Å"Including the famous Navajo ‘Code –Talkers’ † (691), while the United States fighting against Axis power, they used India ns to write messages in their complex native language, so the Japanese couldn’t not translate it. A lot of Indians left the reservations for jobs in war manufacture, but after the war many of them chose not to come back to the reservation. The third scene in this episode is in the hotel’s restaurant area, where all of the characters gather to have breakfast together. The lighting in this particular scene only focuses on the are where the main characters will be at. For instance, the table they are going to sit at, and the buffet area, where Joey and Chandler take some food for their breakfast. While Joey and Chandler walk to the buffet area, the camera follow both of them, in other word, a dolly shot. Although the shot was fairly shaky, it create the audience to think that the restaurant set is very big, when it isn’t. While taking the food, Chandler told Joey that he almost got married to Monica last night. This part made the audience to think that Chandler is talking†¦show more content†¦While the camera was panning, we could see at the right frame that Monica is actually looking at them, then she talk to Phoebe about her getting married to Chandler. We could see clearly that the director try to show what normal life would be, boys talk and girls talk. Seeking friends for advices just like in a real life situation. In the next scene, Chandler and Monica then decided to go to the casino, letting the dice decide whether they will get married or not. While they are walking through the casino, the sound only focuses on the characters, ambience sound is rarely heard, where in the background, we can see people talking to one another, a waiter bringing drinks to the customers, and people playing the machine. At one point, we can hear cash noises from the machine, but even that, the sound is very small that the audience might not have catch it. When Monica throw the dice to the table, we could hear the dice rolling on the table clearly, and the worker talking clearly. During this scene, the director want the audience to focus on the characters movement, not the ambience. The lighting in this scene is again flat, and they lit the light brighter to the area where the characters are going to be. Comparing it with the real casino, this casino is the brightest casino we have ever seen. Comparing the Poetry of Gary Snyder and Ruth Stone Gary Snyder is not only a poet, but a preacher of sorts. His poems carry powerful messages about getting back to your roots. His poems contain strong themes of anti-consumerism and spirituality. Facts is a short piece consisting of facts on consumerism in America. This piece warns of the dangers of over consumption and lack of moderation. In some cases, however, Snyder does appear far too extreme in his views, like in By Frazier Creek Falls where is says We could live on this Earth / Without clothes or tools. This theme of primitivism is a common theme in Snyders poetry. (117).  Ã‚   Thus, most people can relate to this type of demonic bargaining which has become a universal theme in literature. As Brown traverses the forest, he encounters other individuals.   One, who looks strikingly like Brown, accompanies him for a while.   While the reader understands that this man must be one of Brown’s ancestors, Brown himself is blind to the similarities.   This man takes on the role of companion and implies to Brown that his own ancestors made a similar journey, which Brown also disregards. Their encounter with Goody Cloyse is symbolic for two reasons. First, the encounter has Biblical implications and second, it represents another moment if disillusionment for Brown.   The staff is mentioned several times in the Bible.   In one story Aaron throws his staff at the feet of the evil Pharoah and it turned into a serpent.   The serpent represents evil.   When the companion throws is staff at the feet of Goody Cloyse, it also turns into a serpent, indicating her evil nature as well (Hale, 17). Clearly, this parallels with the experiences of mankind.   Disillusionment is prevalent, and it can cause misery, sin and even death.   Loss of faith in an individual or in an institution is devastating.   Many times this loss marks the person for life, preventing them from enjoying what life has to offer.   Acceptance of sin and corruption is very hard to take, especially of a loved one or a firmly held belief. Hawthorne clearly adopted the idea that â€Å"unlovely demons were everywhere, in the sunshine as well as in the darkness, and that they were hidden in men’s hearts and stole into their most secret thoughts† (Abel 133). At the same time, they’re also super common. Chances are, you’ll get asked a bunch of behavioral questions in your job interview. Hiring managers don’t just want to hear abstract ideas about your work ethic or skills. They want to hear about specific times when you achieved something, managed conflict, or bounced back after a failure. One rationale for these questions is that past behavior indicates future behavior. By gaining a sense of what you’ve done in the past, the hiring manager has a clearer vision of how you’ll perform in the future. The other reason behind these questions is that behavioral questions and answers are simply more interesting. They call for specific stories, and these stories make your candidacy more memorable and colorful. You want to leave a great impression, and intriguing anecdotes are one way to accomplish this. Similarly, if you’re asked to provide a failure, don’t choose a story where you failed because you lack one of the core competencies. If the position wants you to be highly organized, don’t go on and on about your problems with organization. In fact, you could subtly highlight the opposite; maybe there was a time you failed to look at the big picture because you were too concerned with details of organization, and you’ve since learned how to balance the two. As you know by now, you should tailor your responses, but don’t just tell the interviewer what you think she wants to hear or choose a cop-out answer, like â€Å"I work too hard† or â€Å"I care too much.† You still want to be authentic and true to yourself. The best way to ace these behavioral questions is to show up with a few prepared success stories in your mental suitcase. Perhaps you can packfour or five that relate to the most common questions - a time you showed leadership, a challenge you faced, a story about teamwork, an example of problem solving, and an instance of failure. Finally, let’s consider the fifth category of questions, the curveballs. Don't get thrown by randomquestions, like, "If you were a vacation, would you be a camping trip, agrouptour, or a luxury spa?" Actually, maybe that one's from a Buzzfeed quiz. Curveball Questions: The Odd and Unexpected We've reached the quirky curveball questions. Like they sound, these questions run the gambit of total randomness. They tend to be odd and imaginative, and are mainly asked to gain a sense of your personality and ability to think on your feet. Of course, if you've already prepared for the right ones, then you won’t have to think on your feet! Some questions aim to root out your entrepreneurial qualities or vision. Others seek to see how you self-reflect and make decisions. Others, well - it’s hard to say what some of these are getting at. That’s why I decided to call them curveballs!
